Navratri Special Sweets – Traditional, Fasting-Friendly & Festive Mithai from Mithdi

Introduction: Nine Nights of Joy, and Every One of Them Deserves the Perfect Sweet

Navratri in Gujarat is not merely a festival. It is nine nights of pure, uninhibited joy — a celebration so vibrant, so musically rich, and so deeply communal that it has no equivalent anywhere in the world. The garba circles, the dandiya rhythms, the flash of chaniya cholis under coloured lights, the collective devotion to Goddess Durga — Navratri is Gujarat’s gift to the world. And at the heart of every Navratri celebration, alongside the dancing and the devotion, are the sweets. Traditional, fasting-friendly, made with the ingredients permitted during upvas (fasting), and yet somehow deeply satisfying and celebratory. At Mithdi, we have curated a range of Navratri special sweets that honour both the dietary rules of the festival and the spirit of joyful indulgence that Navratri deserves.

Understanding Navratri Fasting — What Can You Eat?

Navratri fasting rules vary by community, region, and individual practice. However, several principles are widely followed across Gujarati households during the nine-day festival:

Grains like wheat, rice, and regular flours are typically avoided during fasting

Permitted flours include rajgira (amaranth), singhara (water chestnut flour), and sabudana (tapioca)

Rock salt (sendha namak) is used instead of regular table salt

Dairy products including milk, ghee, paneer, and curd are generally permitted

Fruits, nuts, and dry fruits are widely consumed during fasting

Coconut — in any form — is considered particularly auspicious during Navratri

Sweets made with permitted ingredients and pure ghee are enthusiastically embraced

It is important to note that fasting rules are personal and community-specific. We recommend following your family's tradition or consulting a religious elder for guidance specific to your practice. Mithdi's Navratri range is designed to be compatible with the most widely observed Gujarati Navratri fasting guidelines.

Mithdi’s Navratri Special Sweets — Festive, Fasting-Friendly & Delicious

1. Rajgira Ladoo (Amaranth Ladoo)

Made from puffed amaranth (rajgira), jaggery, and cardamom, these ladoos are naturally gluten-free, grain-free in the fasting sense, and genuinely nutritious — amaranth is a protein-rich ancient grain that provides sustained energy, which is particularly valuable when fasting. The flavour is earthy, mildly sweet, and warming. Mithdi’s rajgira ladoos are made with organic puffed amaranth and pure desi ghee for binding. Available in 250g and 500g boxes.

2. Sabudana Kheer (Tapioca Pudding)

Rich, creamy sabudana kheer is one of the most beloved Navratri fasting foods in Gujarat. Made by cooking sabudana (tapioca pearls) in full-fat milk until thick and creamy, then sweetening with sugar and flavouring with cardamom and saffron, and garnishing with cashews and raisins. Mithdi’s sabudana kheer is available in single-serve clay pots for an authentic, festive presentation. Made fresh and best consumed on the day of delivery.

3. Nariyal Barfi (Coconut Barfi — Navratri Special)

Our Navratri special coconut barfi uses freshly grated coconut, pure ghee, and rock sugar (mishri) — all permitted during Navratri fasting — to create a sweet that is particularly auspicious for the festival. Coconut is associated with Goddess Durga and is considered especially blessed during the nine days. The barfi is soft, fragrant with cardamom, and garnished with saffron strands. Available in 250g and 500g.

4. Til Ladoo (Sesame Ladoo)

Sesame seeds are rich in calcium, iron, and healthy fats — making til ladoo one of the most nutritionally valuable fasting sweets. Our Navratri til ladoos are made with roasted white sesame seeds, jaggery, and cardamom, hand-rolled into perfectly round spheres. The slight bitterness of sesame, balanced by the caramel depth of jaggery, creates a complex flavour profile that is genuinely addictive. While primarily known as an Uttarayan sweet, til ladoo is equally beloved during Navratri fasting.

5. Dry Fruit Chikki — Navratri Energy Bar

A crunchy, chewy slab of mixed dry fruits — almonds, cashews, pistachios, and cranberries — bound with jaggery. Dry fruit chikki is the perfect Navratri snack: energy-dense, naturally sweet, permitted during fasting, and delicious enough to be enjoyed as a dessert after garba. Available in 200g slabs or gift boxes.

6. Makhana Kheer (Lotus Seed Pudding)

Makhana (fox nuts / lotus seeds) are a fasting-friendly superfood that have become increasingly popular in recent years. Our makhana kheer combines roasted makhana with full-fat milk, sugar, cardamom, and saffron in a slow-cooked pudding that is light yet deeply satisfying. A newer addition to our Navratri range that has quickly become a favourite.

7. Churma Ladoo — The Navratri Classic

While traditional churma is made with wheat (not fasting-friendly), Mithdi's Navratri churma ladoo uses singhara (water chestnut) flour or rajgira flour as the base, making it compatible with Navratri fasting while retaining the rustic, nutty, ghee-rich character of the original. Dense, warming, and profoundly satisfying after a long night of garba.

Navratri Gifting — Share the Festival Spirit

Navratri is fundamentally a communal celebration — a time of shared joy, shared devotion, and shared sweets. Mithdi's Navratri special sweet boxes make beautiful gifts for family, friends, garba group members, religious communities, and business associates during the festival:

Navratri prasad boxes for distributing after aarti at home or community gatherings

Festive hampers for business partners and clients during the nine-day festival

Return gifts for your garba group — a sweet memory of nine nights together

Sweets for the elderly and children who may not attend late-night garba

Corporate Navratri gifting — particularly resonant for Gujarat-based and Gujarati-community businesses

Mithdi’s Navratri packaging features festival-themed designs in the vibrant colours of garba — deep reds, emerald greens, and gold — with limited-edition patterns inspired by traditional Gujarati mirror-work and bandhani textiles. Available for a limited time during the Navratri season.
